Jeff Spencer's DVD

This ancient structure, built in 1681, has survived fire, rot, and lightning strikes. Like a good novel, it developed through conflict. Early ministers ran afoul of the powerful Boston establishment for baptizing non-Puritans. In the 1700's they fended off the fiery itinerant preachers of the Great Awakening (the call to return to Calvinism). In the 1800's the Federalists and the Jeffersonians battled over the election of a new minister. As a result, a large group walked out and built their own church up the street. The greatest danger came from the demands of fashion. Twenty years after it was built it was old fashioned. Some years later, thew congregation even voted to tear it down. But fashionable or not, it still stands as the earliest meetinghouse in the country to have been in continuous use as a church. In company with many structures built in the 18th and 19th centuries, it keeps history alive in Hingham.
